Project REPAIR Research Presented at International Science Fiction Conference

Project REPAIR researcher Dr Chris Pak (Swansea University) recently presented research at the Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA) Annual Conference 2026, held at Michigan State University, USA https://sfra.org/. Bringing together an international community of researchers, writers and practitioners, the conference explored the theme ‘Into the Slipstream: Watering Futures’, examining how speculative thinking can help address contemporary environmental and societal challenges.
Chris presented a paper entitled ‘Retrofitting for the Future: Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience’ as part of the panel ‘Land and Ocean Infrastructures and Marginal Life.’
His presentation explored how science fiction and speculative thinking can help us reimagine responses to climate change, drawing on insights from Project REPAIR to consider how nature-based solutions and biophilic approaches can contribute to healthier, more resilient places. By connecting research from the arts and humanities with environmental and social challenges, the presentation highlighted the value of transdisciplinary research in shaping more sustainable futures.
Chris also chaired the conference's Vision and Support Session, which brought together international speakers to discuss how science fiction and futures thinking can facilitate public engagement and activism to inform decision-making and societal change.
As Vice President of the Science Fiction Research Association, Chris's involvement reflects Project REPAIR's growing international profile and demonstrates how the project's research is contributing to conversations that extend beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
